Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS): This agency works with children dealing with a wide arrange of domestic problems. Agency hours are Monday-Friday 8-5. The primary goal of Child and Family Services is to protect children from abuse, neglect, or dependency, as well as to serve their family members who may experience violence in the home.
The Family Place: To prevent child abuse. Agency hours are 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Potential activities at the foundation level include working with the crisis hotline, crisis nursery, outreach program, classes for parents and children (parenting, social skills, anger management, etc.) and community awareness activities. At the advanced level, students will work directly in the therapy department and provide therapeutic services to individuals, families and groups.
Utah Courts- Office of The Guardian ad Litem: The Office of Guardian ad Litem provides attorneys to represent the best interests of children and teens in cases of alleged abuse, neglect, and dependency in the juvenile courts. Sometimes those young people are in foster care, but most often they are able to safely remain at home while the family engages in court-ordered services designed to resolve the circumstances that gave rise to state intervention.
Juvenile Justice Services: Carries out probation orders of the court to juveniles who fall under the jurisdiction of the court. Agency hours 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Potential activities at the foundation level include supervising youth on probation, preliminary inquiries, probation activities, group work, attending court hearings, following up with schools and other agencies.
Quality Youth Services: The mission of the agency is to provide treatment to families and adolescents who experiences difficulties with delinquency issues. Agency hours include day and night work. The agency is located in both Logan and Ogden.
Medical Social Work
Intermountain Healthcare: Provides social services to health care consumers. Hours are typically 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Activities at the foundation level include experience in various service areas as a social service worker. At the advanced level activities include aspects of counseling.
Sunshine Terrace Foundation: Provides mental/physical/social stimulation and health care for older adults and the disabled. The mission is wellness, independence, dignity, and quality of life for those they serve. Potential activities at the foundation level include interacting with clients (Alzheimer’s and disabled), assessments, data collection, social histories, behavioral modification skills, and interaction with caregivers.
Hospice: Services which include pain management, personal care, emotional and spiritual support, bereavement, social services, and respite care. Includes both day and night work.
Center for Persons with Disabilities: Early intervention program for families and children (ages 1-3). The purpose is to promote the development of children under the age of 3, who have disabilities and/or developmental delays and to enhance the family capacity to meet a child’s special needs. Agency hours are 8-5 and the agency is located on the Utah State University campus. Potential activities include assessment of children, working with children with delayed development, and outreach to families and community.
Bear River Mental Health Children Services & Bear River House: Provides comprehensive services to children, adolescents, and families dealing with mental health issues. Provides a balance between treatment, work and social/recreational activities. Agency hours are 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and night activities. Potential activities include case management, group work, learning play therapy techniques, after-school programs, and clinical services to individuals, families, and children. Roles at the foundation level could include working as a skills development specialist.
Bear River Mental Health Department Division of Substance Abuse: New Choices-Services for prevention. Agency hours are 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and night work. The goal of this agency is to enhance the mental and physical health of clients in our community by eliminating substance abuse of any kind and by improving family function, self-sufficiency, and social well-being. Potential activities at the foundation level include educational groups, community projects, and intakes. At the advanced level, there are opportunities for providing counseling to clientele at an individual and group level.
Priestly Mental Health: Located in Preston, Idaho. Hours include both day and night work. Provides case management, group work, and clinical services to individuals, families, and children.
School Social Work
Box Elder School District, Logan School District, and Cache County School District: Provide educational services to children based on the Social Work model of person-in-environment which includes work, programming within the school culture, and identifying resources in the community. Agency hours are generally 7:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Activities include individual treatment, system support, group work, classroom presentations, and responsive services. Placements are in the elementary, middle, and high school levels depending on the school district. Special projects are incorporated into this experience.
