Admission Requirements for MSW Full-Time (1-year) Advanced Standing Candidates:

Students who qualify for this program will complete their MSW degree in one calendar year of full-time study on the Logan campus. The Advanced Standing (AS) program begins in summer and finishes the following May, after a completion of 36 credits. During the intensive summer session, students will complete two 3-credit seminars. After completion of the summer session, AS students will join the full-time students in their second year of the traditional 2-year MSW program.

The cohort will begin the 6-week summer session course work beginning in May and ending in June. Summer seminar sessions will be held from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. AS applications are due in January of the intake yearApplicants are strongly encouraged to take the GRE or MAT by December of the intake year.

Advanced Standing Admission Criteria:
All MSW students must meet the following admissions criteria:

  • A bachelor's degree that will be completed before matriculation in the MSW program

  • A 3.0 or higher grade point average for most recent 60 semester or 90 quarter credits; and SW GPA of 3.3 or higher

  • A score or scores at or above the 40th percentile of the appropriate MSW admissions test, the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). (Although all MSW applicants must take either the MAT or GRE, those with strong applications may qualify for admission even if their score falls below the 40th percentile.)

  • 3 satisfactory letters of recommendation

  • A personal statement

  • At least one introductory social or behavioral science course AND a research methods OR statistics course

  • A minimum of 21 semester hours of social or behavioral sciences is expected; students deficient in this area will need to be highly qualified in other areas to be considered for admission.

  • A 4-year baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university is required for admission to the MSW program.

In addition to the above, students who wish to qualify for Advanced Standing status must meet the additional criteria:

  • Hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited program earned within the previous 5 years

  • Earned a B or higher in each undergraduate Social Work course attempted

  • Have a cumulative SW GPA of 3.3 or higher for all Social Work courses attempted
